Martial Art Classes

Aikido

Our adult Aikido classes are open and suitable to all individuals, regardless of age, size or physical fitness. All classes are mixed levels, and beginners can expect to be looked after by the instructors and senior students in a safe, supportive and inclusive setting.

Students will learn how to move their body in ways to blend with the energy and momentum of an attacker to off-balance them (Kuzushi) and follow with a throw or joint lock. These techniques are typically learned in a step by step method first (Kihon-waza) and then applied in a more free form manner (Jiyu-waza).

A class will usually consist of a group warm-up, practice on how to fall safely (Ukemi), fundamental movements (Kihon-Dosa), and followed by instruction on one or more specific techniques.

Our training philosophy is based on the idea of mutual benefit, meaning all students help each other strive to improve and reach their goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Not at all! Beginners will learn everything they need to know in class.

  • Just fill in the free trial form before coming in for your first class.

  • Any clothes that are comfortable to work out in (eg. t-shirt, trackpants, leggings) and if you decide to continue with classes you can purchase a Gi (training uniform) directly from us.

  • We encourage students to try their best to arrive 10 minutes early, but understand sometimes that is not possible. You are still very welcome to join the class, just be respectful when entering the dojo and stepping on the mat and remember to greet the instructor.

  • Although non-competitive, Aikido is still a martial art. As such, minor injuries (e.g. bruising, scrapes, etc) do happen, but catastrophic injuries (e.g. broken bones) are extremely rare, and completely avoidable if you follow the instructors directions.
